My last post was a year ago, and what a year it’s been! So after finishing my masters, I joined Unit9, as a Game Developer (Unity), and was put to work on my first major project “Electric Tentacle” (produced by Chillingo). Electric Tentacle is an endless runner / side-scroller where the objective of the game is to go as far as you can, collect coins and free your friends along the way (which I’ll explain in a little more detail in a second). First of all, just like the Oscars, I want to thank all those that believed in me… Ha, more seriously I want to thank the team, who were awesome. I learnt a lot from the Lead Developer David Rzepa and from other developer on the project, Nick McVroom.

My responsibilities on the project involved: the quest and achievement system, the persistence manager, the game’s shop, items and pickups, game center integration, parts of the UI, and other odds jobs throughout the project. I’ll hold back on the details of these systems, as I’ll do a series of in-depth posts on each (exploring the technical aspects, problems and solutions I encountered whilst developing them).

So back to the game! The player has to guide the animals through 5 procedurally generated levels, by attracting them via electricity. Basically, when the player’s finger touches the screen, the animal is attracted towards it and a bolt of electricity is created between the two. When the player lifts their finger the attraction link is broken, and the animal just drifts, with whatever force was applied to it. Attracting uses up energy, which you only have a finite supply of, so balancing between attracting and letting your animals drift is essential to success. Furthermore, navigating becomes increasing difficult as the levels get smaller and smaller to manoeuvre. When finally all your animals have been wiped out by the evil nano-bots, the game is over.

All in all, it’s been a great introduction to producing a commercial quality game, and I only have my colleges and unit9 to thank for that.
